Siberian Elm Leaf Size.

Great post from Mike who inspired me to start blogging in the first place. It’s all his fault!

Although this Siberian Elm is a tree that looks better in a winter image, it is still never-the-less a deciduous tree, that for seven to eight months of the year is in full leaf. I always felt it a shame to just let it grow and wait until winter. Sure late Autumn the leaves turn yellow and if we are lucky with winds, it looks nice at this time, as many fall leaving a ‘skeleton’ like look.

The single biggest flush is as the new leaves settle in early Spring; toward mid to late Spring it starts to look untidy. This year I knew that I wanted to reduce the tree down, or reduce the size of the canopy width primarily whilst balancing up the rest of the tree at the same time. Here it can be seen at mid to late Spring.

Sunday Walk – Cavehill, Belfast

Sunday saw Stephen and my brother Phil join me for a hike up Cavehill overlooking Belfast. A lovely warm morning but a bit of a lung buster!

Accent of the Day – Icelandic Poppy

A young plant but if it likes the pot, it should make a nice accent in future years.

The Kennett Collection

Well worth checking out the links that Erick has shared here on his blog. Some interesting stuff about the best collection of Bonsai in the States.

Photos in the Sun

Saturday saw Phil appear in my back garden with a few new trees to get photographed 😉

Stephen cam for a look and Josh appeared with the first load of his collection coming for some Holiday care.

The Other Bit of the Garden

I posted a few snaps of my display area a few weeks ago and some said how they were amazed that I could fit so much into a small space. Well, the reason for that is that I have another area down the back for everything else. Far too much stuff to be honest but a lot of it isn’t mine. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking too it. It’s getting a major overhaul this Winter as the benches at this end are done.

First styling!! A step in the right direction: chronicles of a bonsai show

What an action packed show!!

I don’t know if any of you have ever organized a show: cat show, book show, bonsai show, or whatever else. Well, I have: a cat show a couple of years back and believe me, it’s not an easy task! Without getting into details about my experience as President of our cat club (Abyssinians Breed Club Europe), I would like to report my view of the Swiss Bonsai Show held in Lugano on 8-9 June, 2013.
As a visitor of the show, I must first and foremost say “hats off”! When someone like the Bonsai Club Ticino (a local bonsai club in Switzerland) puts up a show about bonsai, suiseki, kusamono and much more, as someone who’s been through this before, it is immediately clear to me the effort that every single person invested, the energy and nerves, the struggle to organize vendors, the eternal search for sponsors, the…
