Salvaged this one from my front garden a few years back. Only one branch at the top was alive and it had a live vein that was only 2mm wide at one point.
It has a bit to go before it looks like much but I have enjoyed watching it pull though 🙂
This is an update on my Sequoia Sempervirens or Coast Redwood. This was the tree back in 2011 when the initial work was carried out.
April 2011 before work

April 2011 After clear out and basic shaping.

And this was it earlier in the week. As you can see it has put on a little growth.
This is it after some further wiring, mostly primary branches and a few secondary.
I felt that the image was a little uninspiring and wanted to make a slightly more dynamic image, well, as dynamic as you can with this style! I opted to remove two of the lower branches to give the overall image more movement to the left.
It’s obviously still a little unkempt as no fine wiring was done but the basic structure it there. I was reluctant to do much fine wiring as they seem to like to throw branches that are over handled.
I’ll try and give this tree a little more attention now over the next few years and get a balance of growth and refinement. A shari on the trunk would also help add interest, something to think about.
Any of the American followers who work with this species, I’d be delighted to hear your tips for care etc. It’s a rare sight here in the UK.
Helping to spread the word, just read on this thread on the European Bonsai Forum that Alex E in Wales has had some trees stolen.
Please keep an eye out for these in the UK and I hope whoever has them sees this post and realises that 200 – 300 bonsai people from the UK read this blog every day. We are watching! Hope you get caught ❗
If I hear any more I’ll update, or if you know any more, give me a shout and I’ll add it.
Update: Trees actually stolen from a show! Here is a few words from Alex taken from this Thread on IBC.Please also keep an eye out for the others mentioned.

Here are the trees:
Every Summer I look after a collection of bonsai for a friend while he going on holiday to visit family in the South of England. This year saw him downsize to a smaller car which therefore added a few extra runs to his delivery trips to my place. A few of the trees were just too big for his car and I had to pop over and collect the remaining few from him. Some of the really big ones are staying at home under the care of his son who he trusts enough to look after them.
This has resulted in my benches being full to capacity, or even to a point well past that. As you will see in the gallery below, I have crammed my benches and this is only some of them as the rest are in another area. I hope to get time to photograph some of these properly before he returns and share them here with you.
Sunday saw Stephen and my brother Phil join me for a hike up Cavehill overlooking Belfast. A lovely warm morning but a bit of a lung buster!
Saturday saw Phil appear in my back garden with a few new trees to get photographed 😉
Stephen cam for a look and Josh appeared with the first load of his collection coming for some Holiday care.
I posted a few snaps of my display area a few weeks ago and some said how they were amazed that I could fit so much into a small space. Well, the reason for that is that I have another area down the back for everything else. Far too much stuff to be honest but a lot of it isn’t mine. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking too it. It’s getting a major overhaul this Winter as the benches at this end are done.
