And this is it yesterday.
It’s been the coldest Spring here in 30 years and everything is darn right sluggish to get going. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects the rest of the seasons this year.

Korean Hornbeam
Back out on the benches with most of my trees. I will take a gamble that the weather has now turned. This Korean Hornbeam has been slow to bud this year but is now covered with tips of green.
Korean Hornbeam – Winter
Korean Hornbeam Critters!!
A few months back I noticed that a Korean Hornbeam in my garden was being eaten by something. I did the usual search of the leaves but couldn’t find a darn thing. I sprayed with insecticide and left it at that.
Last week I noticed that another Korean Hornbeam, in a different part of the garden was also getting eaten, leaving some leaves like skeletons. This time I spotted the little caterpillars that were doing the damage!
They’ve kind of ruined my chances of decent Autumn colour on this tree now. Has anyone else in the UK had these buggers on their Hornbeams, or even know what they are?
Hornbeam Horrors
I found these little beggers on a Korean Hornbeam at the weekend. It wasn’t my one but I’ve seen leaf damage on it as well. I noticed leaf damage a few weeks back and sprayed with insecticide at the time. I was only checking today to confirm that they were all gone. I guess not! I have never had a year like this one for beasties eating my trees. I have sprayed more than normal, but to no avail. Time to bring out the special stuff that I’m not supposed to have any more 😆
This is the damage caused.
They target the new extension growth and that’s were I found this one. The new leaves failed to open out due to the cocoon created.
When I opened the leaves out this boyo popped out and he was quick as lightning!!
This is my Hornbeam exhibiting a lot of late growth and a few chewed leaves too.
Mario Update
Another Mario tree update. If you haven’t got a clue why I’d be doing this, CLICK HERE
First up is his Satsuki Azalea. It’s a variety called Subaru, so I’m told. I always thought the flower colour was equal throughout this tree, as you can see, I was wrong. Nice shades of pink.
Next up is his Japanese White Pine that has budded strongly this year.
His Korean Hornbeam that got a major haircut to produce back budding on some leggy branches. It’s working.
This is his Japanese Black Pine. It had been in a small pot and I thought that while he was away for a while we could get faster development from this tree by putting it in a bigger pot. I opted for a pond basket to improve the roots.
There you go Mario, that’s your tree fix sent all the way to you out in the sands 🙂

My Korean Hornbeam this week.
Unseasonal?
I had a quick look through my trees on Sunday to see what moisture levels were like in the Tunnels. I noticed a few interesting and perhaps unseasonal things going on.
This Korean Hornbeam belonging to Mario is still in leaf and very fresh it looks too!
This recent growth on a Juniper, and it’s outside still!

Korean Hornbeam Winter Tidy
I braved the garage yesterday to tidy up a few more trees for Winter. Weather has well and truly gone to pot. Last night saw our first snow here.
The Hornbeam was still holding on to a few leaves but this was soon sorted out.

Another important step was to remove the moss to stop pests hiding there. I removed it from the Hornbeam and found quite a few leather jackets lurking there. No wonder the Blackbirds where showing so much interest!
The white stuff is Mycellium which I was surprised to see so much of on a Hornbeam.
This was the tree before placement in the poly tunnel for Winter.
A stage further…
I posted this Korean Hornbeam last week and as you can see, it’s moved on in its Autumn colour. It should be stripped by the end of next week and ready for Winter protection.
