Oak Air Layer Update

Thought I’d share this Oak Air layer update with you. I see many people on forums etc asking if it’s possible to layer an Oak with a lot of conflicting answers. This one was removed from the parent tree back in April 2012. At the weekend I decided to repot the tree properly for the first time. Here you can see that it’s done well in the interim.

After a combing out of the roots and removal of any of the moss used in the original layer.

Some work carried out on some large cuts.

The underside of the trunk gets some whittling as well.DSC_0174

And now potted up in it’s new pot. Some carving required to tidy it up but no rush.

Old Air Layer

This little Shohin Maple was a layering from two years ago. Still very early days but this is it’s strongest year so far and is developing nicely.

Ivy Air Layer Update

I made a few alterations yesterday to an air layer taken last year. Story Here

This was it before work.

The leaves were a bit tatty and they like frequent defoliation. To help me see what why to progress this tree I removed the leaves and ended up removing some of the deadwood too. It was confusing the flow of the tree.

Going for a semi cascade as you can see. This is a different view to show you the movement.

Work still required on the deadwood to the rear but no rush, early days.

Cork Bark Elm Air layer

After removing the air layer from a smallish Cork Bark Elm on the 5th of August, SEE HERE , I was surprised that the parent base has budded so strongly this late in the season.

Hawthorn Airlayer Update

Last year I layered the top of this Hawthorn Case Study HERE

This is the parent plant today. A few flowers at the top. The apex is going to be removed to a lower branch.

This is the layer!! Growing strongly and surprised me with the abundance of flower. These will be removed shortly so as not to stress the tree .

I honestly think the flowers on Hawthorn are under rated. How nice are these?
