Elm Air Layer Removal

My mate Stephen brought this Elm along last night to get the layer removed. He would have done it himself but I have a nice fine tooth saw 🙂 You can see the layer being applied in the original post below.

ORIGINAL POST

As you can see the tree has grown well since then.

On removal of the black plastic and cling film, we were delighted to see a profusion of new roots within the moss.

After a quick swish of my saw…

Now the contrived apex has been removed, Stephen will be concentrating on developing a new apex in a more natural form to suit the tree. The air layer itself is going to make a lovely little semi cascade. I’ll keep you updated here with how it goes.

Juniper Maintenance

I had a few mates around last night for some bonsai craic in my garage.

Before we got started on everyone else’s trees, I lifted in this Juniper of a pinching. It has grown really well this year after a repot and is quick to get out of shape if not maintained.

We had a little session towards the end of the night were 4 of us sat around a tree and talked through it’s good and bad points. This was really productive and enjoyed by everyone, beginners and experienced alike. It was amazing when Stan, new to bonsai, suggested a new front for this tree and I actually had to admit that it was a great option. God I love bonsai 🙂

This is it before.

Feck’n Birds

Just had a good look around my trees today and everyone that had decent looking moss has been demolished!! Me thinks this fella has had a part to play in it!! Grr!!

Sorry for the glare on the photo, it was taken through a window.

Mame Juniper Squamata

This little Juniper has been in my collection for many years. Last year it became weak due to it being very pot bound. I transferred it into this larger pot and changed the angle. All I was hoping for was an increase in foliage and health and it looks like this has been achieved. Today I pinched it out to retain the shape until a proper restyle at it’s new angle next year.

Sorry about the blurred photo, I should be ashamed of myself!

Cascade Scots Pine Update

I gave my Scottie Pine a bit of a tidy up today. It was slower to bud after the repot this year but is looking great now. It still needs a few tweaks here and there with the next rewiring but for the moment it is back budding nicely and seems to be in great health.

‘Tosho’

I decided that my Juniperus Rigeda or ‘Tosho’ as they call them in Japan, needed a trim today. I had planned to leave it as long as possible after getting advice from Peter Snart. Extension allows the wood to lignify and therefore be capable to hold it’s own weight of foliage. What I wasn’t expecting was the vigorous growth it put out over the last 2 months. This has stiffened the branches in the required places and I decided to plough ahead.

I had read the Tosho 1&2 posts on Peter Tea’s blog last night and found these very interesting. Peter has recently moved his blog over to WordPress. This can be viewed here http://peterteabonsai.wordpress.com/

Here’s my Tosho before trimming.

and this is it after shortening of some shoots. A few have been left long and many of the new buds have remained un-pinched to get the desired growth.

New Lens

One of my purchases in America was a new lens for my camera, Sigma 70-300mm. I haven’t had a lot of time to play with it but took it out into the garden yesterday for 10 minutes to see what the macro function was like on it. I took a few random shots of foliage and anything else that would sit long enough. Here’s the results.

Odds & Sods

Rounding off my photos from Florida, I thought I would share a few more. These are just odd shots that I thought some of you might like.

This is a Bald Eagle spotted on the Air boat ride.

A few other birds snapped at Discovery Cove Aviary.

Some of my pool side friends. Lizards everywhere, great to watch.

Not as common, a blue tailed Skink. Wonder how it got the name??!!

These guys visited the trees behind our cabana.

Black Runner Snake came every day to look for lizards.

This was a beautiful little bird that I was just about able to snap. Would love to know what it is. Anybody know?

A noisy pool visitor.

Pond Cypress Seed I believe.

A few from Busch Gardens and Sea World.

Mmmm… Which One first?

Butterfly. Some amazing ones in Florida, but few will sit for the photo!

Not a dam thing to do with bonsai, but I hope you enjoyed them.
