This package hit the doorstep this week, a selection of accents courtesy of Robert Porch. It’s great to have friends who freely swap plants, my collections has swelled greatly in the few years that I have been really into accents and kusamono. Anyone else interested 😉
What impressed me was the clever way it was packaged, a cut down milk container taped closed at the top. Plants wrapped in paper and protected by the structure of the container. Cheap to post too.
Named by Mike Jones a few years back due to the branch structure looking like a dancer with the arms thrown up into the air. This year saw absolutely amazing growth over the Summer. This one has nice fine growth compared to many Hawthorn. Again I will be doing some maintenance pruning while it is bare and some wiring to direct a few errant branches. I may even shift it into a more suitable pot in the Spring, this one was just for training, it was all that fitted at the time of it’s last repot.
This was it back in 2011.
My Silver Birch was just reaching it’s peak Autumn colour, almost ready for a record snap when the wind arrived and shredded it!
This is it, front and back although after a closer look at the tree I’m making a change of front not shown here. More on that another time.
It’s still pretty raw, some carving required to sort out a few issues but I’m delighted how the ramification has improved this year, a great growing season and not a single branch dropped, as they are prone to do. Some wiring now required over the Winter to get the structure tidied up a bit.
It’s been a while since I posted any photos of my ritual Sunday walk, mostly due to the fact that I do the same walks frequently and there is only so many things you can snap. I don’t get time to stop and get the set up right either, my big bro sets a fast pace and I’d get left behind 🙂 Therefore any snaps I take are pause and shoot and jog to catch up again.
Yesterday, we did an old favourite, Sawmills at Crawfordsburn Road to Helens Bay and on to Bangor marina, about 8 miles I think. I did take a few just to capture what was a great morning, a nice frost on the ground and some nice Autumn woodland colour, oh, and a few nosy cattle.

Juan Andrade, who is apprenticing at Aichien very kindly shared some photos taken at Shuga Ten on Facebook. I was blown away by some of the quality trees.
