What a great overview of an Exhibition

Capel Manor 2014

Thanks to Dan for sharing these photos from the Capel Manor Show last weekend. The exhibition is hosted by the Enfield Bonsai Group.

Here are some of the winning trees, displays, club displays and even a few from the John Armitage demo. John did a demo on 2 trees, Juniper was made from £25 material showing what you can achieve for not much cash. The 2nd tree was a cork bark elm, again affordable material – work was done with an aim to air layer into a clump in the spring.

A final note to pass on my condolences regarding Ray Ward from Sussex Bonsai who was also Vice chair of FOBBS, who sadly passed away on Wednesday this week. He did an amazing job creating their club display  at the show and was a prominent and much liked man in the British bonsai community.

Old Fashioned Flower Show

On Saturday I had the pleasure of Judging the Bonsai classes at one of the few remaining old fashioned Flower Shows. Belfast Parks Autumn Fair has been up and down over the years but seems to be undergoing a bit of a revival this year both for the public, who were there on mass and also for bonsai. Our club had done a little bit of a push for members to exhibit this year and they responded with nearly 60 trees on display. It’s far from ideal for displaying bonsai but still serves a purpose to attract the public and recruit new members to the club. Here’s a few general shots of the show. Sorry I forgot my memory card for the camera and had to take these with the phone.

Gotta Love a Tree Critique

Maybe it’s just me but I love it when someone takes the time to video a show critique session, especially when they fight their way to the front 🙂 Thanks of bonsai magazine

It’s always interesting to see what different artists chose to comment on, and we can all learn from that. It’s not always about the quality of the trees but about display in general. This series of videos from the Prairie State Show has Walter Pall and Jim Doyle in full flow. Walter always makes it interesting and Jim has a honest way of putting his information across. The camera zoom/focus noise is a real pain but stick with it and you soon filter it out as the critique progresses.

More from Nekotoban

More shohin bonsai from Nekotoban’s blog  showing exhibits from Kyusyu Miyabi-ten 2013. There’s far more detail re pots and tree species on her blog HERE.

Kyusyu Miyabi-ten 2013

For all you Shohin folk, check these out 🙂

If you want to know more info on species and pot makers then pop over to Nekotoban’s Bonsai Days Blog where she has lots more info listed for each photo. After seeing how popular her exhibition posts were last year, she has taken the time to note more information about each display. There should more exhibition posts to follow.
