Bonsai Eejit 
Ian, Strangely I haven’t had as much trouble this year as in other years. I put it down to the fact that very early in the season I sprinkled copious amounts of slug pellets around the base of my Hostas etc and they are the best they have ever been. I know organic gardeners will be outraged by this. I also take a bucket with me and take a safari around the garden from time to time. Check this stinker out. Bummer!
Might it help to sprinkle lava fines (pumice or scoria) around? I’m thinking the sharp edges might discourage those malicious mollusks.

I suppose it’s all the rain and dampness everywhere. I’ve seen big slugs the size of small children in my nursery this year, I threw them to my hens but even they backed off
