Initial Working #2 Hawthorn

This is another Hawthorn I worded on on Saturday, collected from a hedge a few years ago using a digger and now well established in a pot. Some amazing deadwood that will now be protected. Branch selection and some basic placing done. Raffia on  a few of the heavy branches to get the right placement. Leader left to grow free to help with taper. This will be another great tree in a few years time.

Hawthorn in Flower

At last it’s peaked 🙂 Still very early days with this Hawthorn on it’s bonsai journey but always nice to see flowers.

Getting Close

I see lots of people posting images online of their Hawthorn in flower. I haven’t long to wait either 🙂

Expect to See A lot of These This Year

I don’t think I’ve seen a year like this for Hawthorn flower buds. I expect to see some of the best colour next month.

BSA Exhibition 2014 – A walk around Willowbog Bonsai

With all that was going on at the exhibition, is was easy to forget that just out the door was a bonsai nursery! We were blessed with some sunshine for part of each day and many folk took the chance to have a walk around and see the sale trees and Mr Greedy’s Collection. Here’s a few for you to see.

Hawthorn Pot Change

Yesterday’s post saw me changing the pot on my Fuji Cherry, and this Hawthorn was the recipient of the old pot. I know nothing about this pot other that it looks old, with nice patina. I bought a tree in it and I have a feeling that I got a bargain. There’s no stamps anywhere, I’d love to know a little more about it. The last pot for the hawthorn was matt brown, ok as a training pot, but not doing to much for a fast developing Hawthorn. Loads of roots from the last repot and I was able to make a few adjustments to improve the base this time around.

This was the old pot back in November.

Dancing Hawthorn

Named by Mike Jones a few years back due to the branch structure looking like a dancer with the arms thrown up into the air. This year saw absolutely amazing growth over the Summer. This one has nice fine growth compared to many Hawthorn. Again I will be doing some maintenance pruning while it is bare and some wiring to direct a few errant branches. I may even shift it into a more suitable pot in the Spring, this one was just for training, it was all that fitted at the time of it’s last repot.

Weekend Rewind Part 5

I suppose Monday isn’t technically the weekend, but Peter was still with me that morning and was kind enough to look at a few tree.

Sadly I was that intent on listening and learning I didn’t photograph everything but I did get a few.

This Hawthorn was discussed on the blog last year and Peter told me to wait until he was back over to get a look at it.

I laughed when I saw this photo as it makes Peter look a touch indecisive but I can assure you the opposite was true.

We played about with a few optioned on how much to shorten the branch by using cloth to cover up.

Checking for Chuhin 🙂

And about the only photo with me in it after a whole weekend! Peter lifted my camera for the snip.

After pruning unnecessary branches and shortening of the cascade.

A few other trees were looked at and talked through which I found very beneficial and then it was time to head for the airport. Thanks again Peter.
