Escallonia – Grows like a weed!

Back at the beginning of March I chopped back these two Escallonia in the ground. They are growing in my Dad’s garden and he’s happy for me to steal them. They are long term projects and will eventually require a lot of carving to create an image.

I was totally amazed at there response to being chopped back. The plan was to cut back this year and collect next Spring. The new growth already established on all chopped trunks would hopefully make for better survival odds. Some previous heavy Escallonia’s when cut back hard, have struggled when lifted. This is a bit of an experiment to compare collecting techniques.

Here’s the first one in March before it was chopped.

and after chopping.

A month later in April.

and last week.

This is the second one before the chop.

and after. Not a great shape but you often find hidden wonders under the surface with these.

about a month later.

and this was it last week!!

Hard to believe that I had even cut it back! My Dad even had to trim it again to keep it off the driveway!

Here’s links to the original posts if you are wanting to catch up.

Cut Backs

Cut Backs Update

They both appear to be the same variety as my other one below.

I have my eyes on another one of a different variety. More on that in another post.

Summer Growth – Escallonia

I managed to trim a few trees yesterday, shortening in that growth that occurred in my absence. I’ll share a few pics of them here for your viewing.

This Escallonia had some major extension causing many of the inner leaves to drop. You would almost think that it had dried out, but that wasn’t the case.

I trimmed back the extension growth to tighten in the image again. I’m happy to see the strength in this tree after a major repotting this year.

Escallonia Flowering

I wasn’t expecting much in the way of flowering from my escallonia this year in the way of flowering. It was repotted this Spring and had a major pruning back of the finer branches. However, a few have appeared at the top and add a little extra interest.

Escallonia Flowering – well nearly

After a major pruning over the Winter I didn’t expect my Escallonia to flower this year. However a few around the apex have managed to appear and should be out in a week or so.

Escallonia Update

I cut 2 Escallonia back at the start of March with a view to collecting them next Spring.

This is them back in March.

After 2 months this is the growth they have put out. I was hoping to see budding right to the top of each trunk and I wasn’t disappointed.

Cut Backs Update

Just over a month ago I chopped back two big escallonia cut backs

A month on and the back budding is in full flow.

Escallonia

I took a few update photos of my escallonia yesterday. They seem to becoming quite popular with all the collected ones being shown on the forums of late. I have two more ready for collection next Spring and I have a secret one that’s rather special up my sleeve too 😉

I repotted this one back in November. This would bother some people, but I have found that all the trees I repotted early this year have done really well even after the horrible Winter we just experienced. It all comes down to after care and protection, and this is were a poly tunnel comes in handy.
