Syohin Bonsai Kitakyusyu Branch Exhibition

Sharing these courtesy of Nekotoban Bonsai Days Blog which you should all be following if you are a lover of Shohin Bonsai. She has been doing the rounds of Shohin Exhibitions in Japan, many of which we rarely see here in the west. This is a great insight into display and quality at more local exhibitions in Japan.

Shohin Juniper Reworking

Did a little work on this wee one a few days back. Smaller pot required at some point.

For all you Shohin folk, check these out 🙂

If you want to know more info on species and pot makers then pop over to Nekotoban’s Bonsai Days Blog where she has lots more info listed for each photo. After seeing how popular her exhibition posts were last year, she has taken the time to note more information about each display. There should more exhibition posts to follow.

Shohin Larch Opening

I repotted this little fellow a few weeks back and he’s just coming out.

Shohin Larch Repot

I acquired this little Larch back in September.

Winter Image in November

Last month I removed the rock and restyled the tree ready for a repot.

and on Saturday I repotted the tree into a nice little John Pitt pot that I bought from Willowbog Bonsai earlier in the month. Unusual that it’s glazed but I think it works well with a shohin tree. I might have to make a few adjustments as the tree was a tight fit and I couldn’t pot it exactly at the styled angle, it was going to look unbalanced in the pot with the tree positioned too far to the right and the movement all going to the right. By tilting the tree I was able to show a better nebari and show a better balance to the composition.

Shohin Larch

I posted about this Larch recently. It’s the latest addition to my collection. Originally a landscape with a rock in the pot, I removed the rock and have now wired the tree into it’s new shape. Next step will be a repot. I can see a few problems with the roots and fitting them into an appropriately sized pot. I think I have one for the job but time will tell.

Rock removed

DSC_0026

This is it after wiring and shaping. I have removed a heavy front branch that was blocking some of the real character exhibited in the trunk line. A small jin created but this may be removed soon. I’ve just left it for now to consider.A lot of thinning out done and many smaller but overly heavy branches removed.

A slightly different angle that shows the trunk line a little better.

Shohin Larch Winter Image

This is the little Larch recently added to my collection. The rock is soon to go and the pot will be changed. This is the first chance I’ve had to see the structure and I’m delighted with the prospects. Loads of ramification and character to work with.

New Shohin Larch

I have acquired a very nice little Shohin Larch from a friend who is giving up bonsai for personal reasons. This tree was originally planted with this rock to create a nice little landscape. However the tree has developed well over the years and I feel the tree is too good to just be used as part of a landscape and I am therefore potting it up alone in the Spring. The bark on the tree has matured nicely and will be better appreciated when the rock is removed. The rock is also lacks the character that the tree has and I feel that together they are a mismatch. Again, more on this tree in the Spring.

Shohin Juniper

This little Shohin Juniper had a hard year last year and seemed to be struggling a little. All seemed to stem from a repot. However, with some TLC, good light and this great weather, it seems to have made a comeback. I’ll give it until the Autumn and perhaps a little wiring is in order.
