The Young Ones

My display benches have become a playground for some newly hatched birds over the last week. A young blackbird awaits it’s Mum on my pots while two young Robins fight each other for the right to sit on my trees. All very entertaining 🙂 If I could only manage to get the camera out quick enough to capture the little Wren that does a patrol of my trees each day looking for greenfly.

Buzz Off

Always a challenge to get one in flight especially with no tripod!

Bird Feeder

Not much happening this week other than some major computer issues!!!

Anyway, I did manage to snap a few photos of some wild birds on a feeder through a window, hence they are a little fuzzy.

Photos include Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Redpoll, Gold Finch, House Sparrow.

Winter Walk

Last Sunday I walked a bit of the County Down coastline with Stephen and Philip. WE could hardly call it walking in a Winter Wonderland but it was pleasant al the same. Trees, birds, water, dogs, wind! take your pick. Notice a confused gorse bush in flower!

Autumn Colours on the Wing

Even the Butterflies in my garden have Autumnal colours at the moment!

Korean Hornbeam Critters!!

A few months back I noticed that a Korean Hornbeam in my garden was being eaten by something. I did the usual search of the leaves but couldn’t find a darn thing. I sprayed with insecticide and left it at that.

Last week I noticed that another Korean Hornbeam, in a different part of the garden was also getting eaten, leaving some leaves like skeletons. This time I spotted the little caterpillars that were doing the damage!

They’ve kind of ruined my chances of decent Autumn colour on this tree now. Has anyone else in the UK had these buggers on their Hornbeams, or even know what they are?

Hare!

When I was at Susan’s Home on Tuesday both her and her husband were telling me about a young hare that stays mostly in their garden, sometimes raiding the vegetable patch. Now, if you said it was a rabbit, it would be more believable, but a hare is well known as a shy animal and hard to get close too.

Well after about 45 minutes of standing talking about pots, this fella appeared in the vegetable patch. You can see how close I was able to get before he bolted for it. I have a spot spot for the Irish Hare. This is a young one with a lot of growing still before he reaches his majestic best.

Small Tortoiseshell

I’m amazed just how many of these Small Tortoiseshell butterflies are in my garden this year. Never seen so many.

Buddleia Visitors

Snapped these visitors to my buddleia the other day.

My two dogs made good use of a few hours of sun too.

More Bird Capers

On Wednesday we had a stormy day with high winds and rain. I spotted these fellows on on my stands sheltering underneath the tree canopies.

Can you spot both of them in the first photo? A couple of Thrush.

I then managed to get a few shots of a little wren that up until now has been illusive. My favourite bird in the UK. Not great photos taken on the fly through a window, but good enough for my tatty blog!

The Thrush managed to make a right mess of some of my pot contents but I also saw one banging away with a snail against a stone, so that made me happy.
