After a crap night’s sleep on Thursday night listening to a pretty bad storm blattering my bedroom window I awoke and went to work. On my return home I thought I better have a check around the trees.
Not good!!
My big Scot’s Pine took a dive off the bench and travelled a good few feet before hitting the ground smashing the lovely Ian Ballie pot 😦 I also lost a few minor branches which I can live with. This is the tree that I was going to use for my workshop with Ryan Neil in January.
On the way down it took a Japanese Black Pine and a Cotoneaster with it. No broken pots but the Cotoneaster has a partially broken branch that I’ve patched up in the hope that it will recover.
I used some sealer and then a wrap around of self amalgamating tape to keep the wound from drying out.
This other Scottie in training also took a tumble. The wind must have had some serious gusts to shift this one from were it was sitting!! Only in a wash hand basin thank goodness!
Lesson learned!!

yes, I must admit that we don’t do it but it makes you see why, in so many pictures of bonsai in Japan, the trees are tied onto the benches ! bad luck Ian !

It was the gusts that did it. Was lying awake listening to it rattle the house. In hindsight a torch and a middle of the night tree shifting might have been in order, but I didn’t want to get hit by a flying roof slate!!

Ure gardens not as shelterd as it looks . Lucky the greenhouse didn’t go with glass missing in roof ! Have u a pot for pine ?

Wind had to be from a different direction! Look at what fell and from where! The Scottie in the basin was against the back fence, any wind from between the two house would have missed it. Gusts of 80+ mph seem to be the issue. Glass in greenhouse is all siliconed in.

unlucky m8. It was just as mad here – I whizzed home from work at 10am and put everything on the ground under the benches when the wind was just getting gustyas my hinoki was on an exposed corner! . By 3pm it was 80mph and the rain was unbelievable. We thought my unit roller door was going to cave in as it is 6m high but with the forklift pressed up to the inside everything held. I was growing a nice multi trunk privet in a flower bed and it has snapped clean off about 1″ above the soil. Pine will be ok for styling i think as it wasnt in active growth
