Club Activity

I spent last night setting up the stands for our clubs forthcoming exhibition this weekend.

Stands had to be collected from storage.

and then unloaded again at the other end.

Some who always complain about my camera time, were hard to find when the unloading was taking place. That fake call App on his phone worked a treat 😛  🙂

Building the stands, starting to take shape.

I dread to think what’s going on here

Cloth makes a big difference

Ready for the bonsai later in the week.

Trident Tidy up for Exhibition

Our club has a display this weekend and I gave my Trident a trim for the show.

Happy Snapping

We had a bit of a photo session the other week. Hugh can down to my garage with a better camera and some lighting. The plan was to photograph some trees with a view to submitting them for selection in the Best of British Exhibition next year. You never know a few might be selected but we had good fun anyway taking the shots.

These are some of the trees we shot. Some mine, some Josh’s, some Phil’s and some Stephen’s. Bar the shohin, all show front and back.

Great Weekend

After two days of the Club  Bonsai School and Workshop taking place at my home, I’m absolutely shattered. And if I’m knackered, how must Peter Snart be feeling as he’s an old man 🙂

In two days of fantastic weather we have achieved another great club event with some really good feedback from fellow members. No photos on the computer yet but will get some up as soon as I can. To brighten up the post, I’ll add a photo of my cascade Scots Pine.

Larch Forest Pot Virtual

Roy C brought this Larch forest to the club meeting on Friday. Roy has been creating bonsai for many years on his own, learning from books and his own experiences. About a year ago he heard about the NIBS and made contact through the Website. He has a bit of a drive to make it to the meetings but when he gets there, he always has something interesting to see.

This forest was created from young Larch seedlings that had self seeded into the guttering on a shed roof at his farm! When he put this group together, he added the white limestone as it reminded him of his local landscape. I quite like this sentimental idea but in it’s current form, the white rock over powers the image and the rocks are a little too angular.

We chatted about the group at the meeting and I made a few suggestions that in my opinion would make for a better image.

Firstly I felt that the stones should go. The rock to the left look as if they are holding the trees in the pot and are very distracting.

Secondly I felt that the height of the soil mass should then be reduced. It sits very high in the pot in its current design. This may be more sustainable in a wider pot.

Thirdly, a change to a larger, shallower oval pot would greatly improve the image. The current rectangle is too deep and inappropriate for a group.

Lastly, I felt that a few of the trees should have their height adjusted to give a more overall triangular over view. This could be enhanced by adding a further small tree or two at the edges.

I took a photo and said I would play about with a virtual to see if helped explain my views. Here is what I came up with.

A smaller tree could still be added to the right hand side during repotting. If Roy still wanted to include some white stone, a well weathered piece with a more worn appearance could be added in the space to the right as well. It would need to be low lying, mostly buried, just visible on the soil surface. Two trees to the right have been shortened as well.

With a few more years of ramification and a little wiring here and there, I think this will be a very nice little group indeed. Moss would be nice but the sparrows on the farm do major damage, but the less said about the sparrows and Roy, the better 😉

Larch Night @ The Club

I’m heading to an NIBS meeting tonight were we will be looking at some of the members Larch Bonsai. Our meetings are always workshop based and this year we have decided to theme a few of them on a specific species to allow for better learning. First meeting of the new year and I must admit, I’m rather looking forward to it.

I’m taking along this Larch group. It needs some thinning out where branch tips have become too congested with buds.

Club AGM

Friday night was the NIBS AGM and I find myself as Chairman for another year. When you work with such a good team, staying as Chair for another year is no big chore. We like to get the business over with ASAP and get stuck into a few trees. My camera was doing the rounds and some smart arse captured me in a few photos. The first one does me no favours, but I think it’s only fair to display it as I’m always ready to snap everyone else in their moment of weakness 🙂

I got a few of the chaps to strip the last few leaves from my Trident. Now I can tuck it away for the rest of the Winter. I’ll post better photos of it later in the week.

Larch Progression in 2011

I have just added this post to the NIBS club site about a Larch that has been worked on by a club member this year. No point in reproducing it here, just click on the image of the tree below to view the post.

Club Night

Last night was NIBS Club night. Normally a workshop, but last night turned into a demo! Most of the bonsai and material brought by the club members was there for advice rather than work. We opted to do this as a group and also styled a little Chamaecyparis Obtusa. As I was busy, Stephen took over the camera duties.

This was a lovely little Common Juniper that is crying out for a nice pot next year.

Weighing up the options on a Potentilla.

The little Chamae.

The basic styling has been completed. We decided not to fine wire or over pinch at this early stage. We will revisit this little one next year.

Movie Maker

I spent a few hours today putting together a video to show case our club display at the weekend. Nothing too fancy, just something put together with Movie Maker. I’m getting to grips with the camera and it’s video functions. I even managed to find time at the show to take a few clips of individual bonsai.

I’m amazed by the success of our Club You Tube Channel that started back in November and has nearly 13,000 views to date!! I know I trawl around looking for good quality or informative bonsai videos on the net, it appears I’m not alone 🙂 With a little extra effort we have been able to put together clips of tree progressions, shows and the popular Bonsai School. These seem to be what people want. They are not up to the standard of the Graham Potter, Bonsai Basho, Atelierbonsai  or  Bjorvalabonsai, but add to the total of the online bonsai community.

If you want to have a look at the latest video, it’s just went live on the channel. Click below to view.
