Chuhin Maple

This is my Chuhin sized Maple in leaf again after defoliation.

Summer Growth – Trident Maples

Before I left I defoliated my big Trident Maple as seen below.

This is it now four weeks later, I even had to shorten a few shoots.

My other smaller Trident had been defoliated earlier in the year and had been in full leaf again before I left. On my return it had extended some what.

Again both of these trees had been repotted this Spring and this shows just how strong a tree they can be even in my climate!!

Summer Growth – Escallonia

I managed to trim a few trees yesterday, shortening in that growth that occurred in my absence. I’ll share a few pics of them here for your viewing.

This Escallonia had some major extension causing many of the inner leaves to drop. You would almost think that it had dried out, but that wasn’t the case.

I trimmed back the extension growth to tighten in the image again. I’m happy to see the strength in this tree after a major repotting this year.

Looking good

The Cotoneaster that my brother pulled out of a garden is looking good.

Here’s the story so far.

Free Cotoneaster

Signs of Life

This is it now. It’s a squat chunky wee fella with lots of scope for carving. My hand for scale.

It liking the conditions in the poly tunnel and the nice open mix of grit and cat litter. It’s even budding up at the top of the tallest trunk.

Exposed Root Spirea

I spilt a spirea last year into two separate trees. One is now root over rock and this one is exposed root style. It’s had no real training as yet but the flowers are pretty, so I thought I’d share.

Tale of two trees

These are two Celtis I have. I think that’s what they are I’m not sure see here

This first one was repotted this Spring and was placed in the poly tunnel. I didn’t defoliate as I want to thicken the branches and chop back.

Spring 2011

April 2011

and now

The other one wasn’t repotted and had been outside on a bench. For some reason this one got mildew and I had to defoliate. I thought being outside with good air circulation would have been a less likely spot to get mildew, but what do I know.

This is it a month after defoliation.

Shohin Maple

This is the little Shohin Maple that you might recognise from the latest series of NIBS School videos. Peter used it frequently to point out issues with branch structure. It has just opened in leaf again after defoliation.

Here’s a link to a previous post about this tree. Shohin Maple Update

Rigeda Juniper Deadwood

I finally got around to cleaning up the deadwood on my Rigeda Juniper. I defined the limits of the live veins, tidied it up a little with a wire brush and treated with two coats of lime sulphur diluted to 1:5 ratio.

This was after one coat of Lime Sulphur.

and after the second coat. I reduced a long heavy branch at the bottom left and shortened a few branches in the apex that had reached the desired thickness.

This is the back of the tree. The deadwood needs a lot of refining here to improve a very flat boring area. However there is one branch at the back that isn’t connected to the main vein and I wanted to avoid working in this area. To be honest it’s hard to tell where the live vein is for this branch. It may have a slight crossover from the front. Any way, no rush. Tree will be left now for the rest of the year to get used to my garden and my care.

Fuji Cherry Update

I did a bit of an experiment on this Fuji Cherry back on the 23rd of May.

Fuji Cherry Experiment

I hadn’t heard of a cherry being defoliated and this one was prime for it as I needed to de-wire it. This is the tree now over a month later. It was slow at first but has really pushed hard this last week. It’s been in my Poly Tunnel in this time and seems to love the humidity.

I’ll keep you posted with details on how the Autumn colour turns out this year and if it has any affect on the flowering next Spring.

Trident pushing on after defoliation

My Trident is opening nicely after it’s early defoliation. I’ve been known to defoliate this fella twice in a year but after repotting this Spring I’m going to leave it alone now for the rest of the year.
