But having seen what Google Translate does to Spanish — which I can read for myself — I don’t trust it all that much for other languages! Just sayin’.

It’s certainly better than nothing at all; I’m just advising people to double-check a machine translation if they get the chance.
That’s one reason I’ve enjoyed translating a couple of Spanish-language blog posts for ofBonsai (Paul Stokes) and expect to do more from time to time. Not to mention that I’ve learned something about bonsai each time!
