Trim and Tuck

Yesterday I did a little trimming back of Summer extension growth on a few deciduous trees before tucking them away in the green house for Winter.

I’m trying to increase the overall outline of this Trident maple and have therefore allowed for more extension than normal to remain.

  1. I love the last one, really nice piece. However, I think you started building the main crown too early. There is no tapper. I see 2 options – let it thicken and build the top from scratch or make the tree lower to hide that. What do you think?

    • I smiled when I saw your comment, I was giving some serious thought to this as I was working on it yesterday. The tree as you see it now is how it was when I bought it about 3 years ago. There is some deadwood work required between the two trunks and I’m giving some thought to layering off the top of the main trunk and shortening the smaller one this Spring. It seems a shame for such a powerful base to have such an unconvincing upper trunk. I can then rebuild the crown of the tree.

Thanks for your observations, if you keep an eye on the blog you might see this happen next year 🙂
