Starting to Move

I checked most of my trees last Sunday and didn’t see many signs of Spring. Then, 4 days later, I checked again. This was what I found on Thursday!

These are fast swelling flower buds on a Fuji Cherry.

These are Trident Maple buds, 3 different trees.

I even saw a cloud of midges outside our lounge window! February? What’s going on!!

Away for the Winter

I lifted a few of my trees away from their stands today. They had finished their show for the year and are now being tucked away for the Winter.

This Fuji Cherry was nearly bare.

It is totally bare now 🙂

I’m going to look up a few of the photos from this tree during the year and do a season by season  post. Should be nice seeing the flowers fruit and Autumn colour all on one page.

This Crab Apple has also dropped all it’s leaves. I took the wire off before putting it away for Winter. All branches seem to have set from it’s wiring in the Spring.

Final Fuji Fotos

These will be the final photos of my Fuji Cherry for the year. When it eventually started turn it went very quickly. I experimented on it this year by defoliating it. I don’t think it made any difference with the depth of colour or how long it held the leaves. This was it on 4th October.

and this was it yesterday with a touch more red colour. Pity most of the leaves have fallen already.

Longer Leaves on Fuji

I had posted earlier in the year about my Fuji Cherry. HERE and HERE.

I had experimented with it this year by defoliating. I wanted to see how a cherry would react to this in it’s growth and if the Autumn colour would be better. It also helped me de-wire as I couldn’t see the wire among the dense foliage.

After it came back into full leaf I thought that the leaves were slightly longer than before. Not bigger, just more pointed. It was until I took another Fuji of the same variety into holiday care that I noticed the difference. Both are ‘Kojo-no-mai’.

The top leaf shown here is a normal shape, the one below is my one after defoliation.

Some Autumn colour is starting to creep in but it still looks fresh. Guess I’ll have to wait and see how it goes.

Fuji Cherry Update

I did a bit of an experiment on this Fuji Cherry back on the 23rd of May.

Fuji Cherry Experiment

I hadn’t heard of a cherry being defoliated and this one was prime for it as I needed to de-wire it. This is the tree now over a month later. It was slow at first but has really pushed hard this last week. It’s been in my Poly Tunnel in this time and seems to love the humidity.

I’ll keep you posted with details on how the Autumn colour turns out this year and if it has any affect on the flowering next Spring.
