“Bill Jumps A Broad- Again”

Kora Dalager and I are back in Japan showing ten people the best of the Japanese bonsai world and the Taikan Bonsai Exhibition in Kyoto this coming weekend. We have tour members from California, Texas, Virginia, Pennsylvania New York, and Switzerland.

We had a beautiful, bright sunny day in the Tokyo area. Not a cloud in the sky which made photographing a bit difficult. BUT, it looks like I skipped town at the right time. When I left home, all my nursery stock, pre-bonsai and sales bonsai were put away for winter. Only 98 of my best trees were outside, and still are, even though Diane offered to move them in the garage. Buffalo, New York has received 50 inches of snow and are expecting ANOTHER 2-3 feet of snow now in the second wave of weather. It missed Rochester, this time, who know about…

One to One – Larch

I had Ben here for a one to one session today. He brought this big Japanese Larch with him. He collected it with us a few years ago and it had grown strongly under his care. This is the tree as collected.

This was it at 12pm today. The session saw us having to make a few decisions.

Ben was keen to make a twin trunk image but the two main trunks were both similar in size and thickness. We talked through the options and eliminated the faults leaving everything else for wiring.

A few bends were added to improve the trunk line to the apex and we shaped it to create this first styling image, and as you can see, it’s a twin trunk, just not the trunk that was expected.

This was it at 5pm.

It is with a tremendous sense of loss that we have to announce the death of Paul Goff, on Monday November 10^th following a severe stroke last week.. He will be very greatly missed by all in the bonsai world in the UK. Known most especially for his skill with photography and his ability to teach us all how to display our trees in the best possible way. He was a scroll painter, photographer, rock musician and bonsai artist. And at 62 was still a man young in heart ready to enjoy life to the full. His spirit of enjoyment and extensive knowledge will be missed by all who knew him

Our thoughts and wishes go out to his partner Vivienne as well as to his family and friends at this very sad time.
