Ian, Strangely I haven’t had as much trouble this year as in other years. I put it down to the fact that very early in the season I sprinkled copious amounts of slug pellets around the base of my Hostas etc and they are the best they have ever been. I know organic gardeners will be outraged by this. I also take a bucket with me and take a safari around the garden from time to time. Check this stinker out. It’s an ugly brute. http://bonsology.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/sluggin-it-out/
Bummer!
Might it help to sprinkle lava fines (pumice or scoria) around? I’m thinking the sharp edges might discourage those malicious mollusks.
I suppose it’s all the rain and dampness everywhere. I’ve seen big slugs the size of small children in my nursery this year, I threw them to my hens but even they backed off
